FinOps Certified Analyst (FOCA)

Overview

The FinOps Certified Analyst (FOCA) credential validates the hands-on analytical skills required to operate inside a mature FinOps practice. While the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) establishes framework literacy, the Analyst track focuses on the day-to-day execution work: ingesting billing data, building allocation models, running anomaly investigations, producing showback reports, and driving stakeholder conversations with data.

The certification was introduced by the FinOps Foundation in 2024 as part of a redesigned certification ladder that now separates framework knowledge (Practitioner) from applied analysis (Analyst) and strategic leadership (Professional). It maps closely to the FinOps Framework 2025 refresh, which centralized the Capabilities model and elevated the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) as the canonical billing data schema.

Target Audience

  • Cloud FinOps analysts, cost analysts, and cloud economists
  • Cloud engineers and SREs who own cost dashboards or allocation logic
  • Finance, procurement, or business operations staff doing cloud cost analysis
  • Data analysts and BI engineers building cost data models
  • Anyone who already holds FOCP and wants to demonstrate applied proficiency

Prerequisites

  • FOCP is recommended but not strictly required
  • Comfort reading cloud billing exports (CUR 2.0, Azure EA/MCA, GCP billing export)
  • Basic SQL, spreadsheets at pivot-table level, and familiarity with at least one BI tool
  • Working knowledge of one major cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP) billing constructs

What Makes This Exam Different

FOCA is more applied than FOCP. Expect calculation questions, interpretation of billing rows, and "given this FOCUS dataset, what is the correct allocation" style questions. Memorizing the six FinOps principles is not enough, you need to reason about amortization, commitment coverage, and blended versus unblended pricing in context.
