  1. VPC Service Controls vs IAM: VPCSC is data exfil prevention (perimeter); IAM is access control (who). Both required for data isolation.

  2. Workload Identity vs service account JSON keys: Workload Identity (GKE / Anthos) eliminates JSON key storage. The PCSE answer for any GKE β†’ GCP API question.

  3. Cloud KMS vs HSM vs External Key Manager:

  4. Software keys: software-protected (FIPS 140-2 L1)
  5. HSM keys: hardware-protected (FIPS 140-2 L3, in Google's HSMs)
  6. External Key Manager (EKM): keys held outside Google (your on-prem HSM) Pick by compliance requirement.

  7. Customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) vs Customer-supplied (CSEK) vs Default:

  8. Default: Google-managed
  9. CMEK: customer-managed via Cloud KMS
  10. CSEK: customer-supplied (you provide key bytes per request) - rare, use Cloud Storage / Compute Engine

  16. Cloud Armor: WAF + DDoS adaptive protection. Standard tier (rules) vs Plus tier (subscription, Adaptive ML).

  17. Confidential VMs: in-use encryption via AMD SEV / Intel TDX. Required for memory-encryption compliance.

When stuck

  1. Identify the layer - identity (Cloud Identity / IAM), platform (VPCSC / firewall), data (KMS / Sensitive Data Protection), ops (SCC / Chronicle).
  2. Default to Google-recommended modern patterns - Workload Identity over JSON keys, IAP over VPN, CMEK over default.
  3. Eliminate "share JSON keys" - always wrong in PCSE.

Pass: Cert valid 2 years.

Fail: Most failures cluster on Identity (~25%) or Platform Protection (~20%).
